OOZE: A (Reasonably-Priced) Take on the Fashion of GOOP

Written by on May 19, 2011 in All About Style, Outfits - 10 Comments

I had heard of this world of Gwenyth Paltrow’s called “GOOP” before, but had mainly ignored it due to the reviews that indicate it shamelessly promotes a world that’s outside the realm of what most of us non-celebrities deem “Reality.”  But a recent GOOP newsletter, forwarded to me by Jen on the Edge, was too good to pass over.

GOOP Spring 2011, Gwenyth PaltrowThe latest newsletter features something called “GET,” in which GP shows us how to shop for fun spring looks.  Fun if you have a good chunk of change to blow, that is.  For example, the look above — a “dressed up” look modeled around a Stella McCartney jersey dress — will cost you a pretty penny, to the sound of $4,680 (before taxes)!  Yes, this one outfit costs nearly $5,000.  I’m sorry, Paltrow, but I won’t be GETting this ensemble.  And neither will, I dunno, 99% of the population.

What Ms. Paltrow fails to show us is how the rest of us can achieve the same style (which, admittedly, is chic – she definitely has an eye for fashion) with a much, much smaller pocket.   (To be fair, Net-a-Porter does recommend similar, lower-priced items, but still not low enough to fit most people’s budgets.)  So I’ll take a shot at making these looks a reality.  I’ll call this segment OOZE (because if Gwenny can have a witty acronym, why can’t I?):

O.O.Z.E. = Ooze of Zealous Ensembles

(Where the “O” stands for OOZE!)

A casual look from GOOP.  Total price = $2,650 (from Net-a-Porter’s suggested comparable pieces).  Side note:  I do question if this look really works, with the mixing of patterns.  Possible?  Totally.  But it’s difficult to see when she doesn’t actually have the cardigan on.  (Very suspicious, Gwen!)

I knew that you’d be able to find much more reasonable versions of Gwynnie’s overpriced outfits. Thank you!

Yes! Love it! I can’t look at GOOP. I fear it’s so self-indulgent that my head will explode. There are some super snarky bloggers who go for broke each time it comes out. Those are fun to read. :)

Seriously brilliant! Love it Dana….of course now my mind is running to alternate baby names (ie pear, or currant) and maybe a faux vegan menu by a food blogger?!

Thank you, thank you! I had to unsubscribe to the GOOP newletters because she is so incredibly out of touch with regular people….or maybe I am just not in her target market. Kind of like reading Oprah magazine (“Oprah bought these great $700 shoes for all her friends!?”). Would love to see some more of these posts!

This is awesome Dana! Gwyneth makes me nuts. It’s nice to see someone provide a more realistic version of these (admittedly kind of cute) outfits. I like your versions much better! Also — does her sloppy hair drive you crazy, too?

Ooo, I love it. Thanks for doing this. Instyle magazine does this same thing (putting outfits together) and their prices tags are, well, pricy!

I am so not ready to take lifestyle / cooking / shopping / parenting advice from Ms. Gwyneth. Great actress in a number of roles, but not someone I’d pick for my Yoda. Love your take on it: bring on the OOZE!

OOZE. That’s awesome. I think the stripes and florals mix fine, but then I’m a little bit wacky. :)
I can’t fathom spending thousands of dollars on a regular day-to-day outfit. Seriously, it just baffles me.
