Swimming Lessons

The title says it all: I, Dana, a full-grown adult, have signed up for beginner swimming lessons.

I never had any real lessons growing up, and have always had some sort of a fear of being underwater, and diving or even just jumping into it. It’s almost a phobia for me, but I don’t think it’s anything I’m not able to overcome, with proper guidance.

I’ve signed up for four 45-minute private lessons at ACAC.  One each week up until the trip to Jamaica.  I’m excited about kicking my fear to the curb and enjoying swimming, snorkeling, and other fun things on vacation without the stress.

One slight issue:  class starts this Thursday, I had no suitable suit to wear, and shopping time is limited.  (For swim classes, I think it would behoove me to wear a one-piece, which I didn’t have.)  In a pinch, I ventured over to Target, where I get pretty much all my swimsuits anyway.  Much to my dismay, they had a whopping total of THREE one-piece suits to choose from.  One was teal – my favorite color! – but in an unsightly paisley.  The other wasn’t flattering and wasn’t in my size anyway.  This left me one choice, which I’m not too unhappy about:

Target Swimwear

Swimsuit:  $34.99, Cover-up:  $17.99, at Target
Target Swimwear by cvillefashion on Polyvore.com

I picked up the cute terry-cloth cover-up too, but in white.  I think the suit was actually a good, basic buy.  A black one-piece is a classic item I believe all women should own.  It’s flattering, and never goes out of the style.  This one has a fun print, which makes it a bit more interesting, but nothing too wild or trendy.  I can see myself wearing this for many seasons.

Where do you like to go to get your swimwear?

I took swimming lessons as an adult, so you’re not alone.

I always get my bathing suits from Lands’ End, because they have a nice selection of suits for all body types and the bathing suits hold up really well.

Others have had similar things to say as far as the lessons, so that makes me feel a little less like a 5-year-old! :) Thanks for the tip on Lands End.

I agree with Jen, I love Lands End suits. Good quality and lots of choices. And good for you, taking the lessons. I think every one should know how to swim, just for safety’s sake.

      Thank you, I totally agree!

My husband is teaching me how to swim (he was a swimmer in elementary, middle, high school and college,) so you are definitely not alone. It sounds weird but I get my bathing suits at Sam’s Club. They don’t carry them all the time but when they are in stock they’re great great quality and inexpensive. I got a Speedo suit for under $25.

A great tip that people probably haven’t thought about before – thanks for sharing!

i like this suit a lot, esp cut on top.

I like it too, despite initial reservations. It’s really comfy and I don’t have to worry about accidents with the top or anything. If anything like that happened at class, I’d be mortified!

I think it’s awesome that you’re taking swimming lessons. I feel like I should beef up my swimming skills since I absolutely hate getting water up my nose.
Last summer I found the ultimate bathing suit at Anthropologie. It’s a black one-piece with a sort of halter neck and some ruching on the front and a boyish leg. It’s made by an Australian company and it is the most flattering suit I’ve ever worn. I feel really confident in it.

The suit sounds beautiful! As for the water, I really hate that as well. My first class helped me improve a lot – it really taught me how to breathe better in the water, so you avoid having that happen.

Yeah for you! I hope you have better luck with the snorkeling than I did. I sunk like a rock (must be the ginormous ta-tas) so I consoled myself with a giant cocktail in a pineapple on the beach.

I like Target swimsuits but, what with the enormous strain on the material, I usually try to get a good quality one at Land’s End, as well.

Haha, the pineapple cocktail sounds more appealing anyway! I am looking more and more at Land’s End for another suit. Not that I don’t like the one I have, but I want to have maybe one more for the trip to Jamaica next month.

I am on the hunt for swimsuits for a trip at the end of the month as well. I have about 10 on order from J Crew and Lands End Canvas (a little younger than the regular lands end line) and will let you know what ends up the best. I don’t feel like C’ville has a great selection so I turned to the internet.

We really don’t have the greatest selection, do we? LOVE your blog, by the way!
